The Many Faces of Lee Miller

Do you ever stumble across an iconic image and determine

to know more about the person behind the photograph ?

These investigations often put me in quite the

Sherlock position .. . . thought I must admit,

the internet makes it relatively simple.

This classic image of Lee Miller by Man Ray

was just such an adventure.

Upon inquiry I learned she was not only

a stunning model but also a portrait photographer,

war correspondent, surrealist muse and artist.

As WWII ended, she was one of the first photographers

to arrive at Hitler's secret apartments. She promptly

dropped her muddy clothes and jumped into his bathtub !

Gotta love a girl who walks into Hitler's bathroom

and recognizes a unique photo op.

As an admirer of Tina Chow, I was thrilled to find her stunning jewelry in Bergdorf Goodman's in the mid 80's
and promptly purchased a Rutilated Quartz Temple ring.

Several months later I ran into her, told her how much I was enjoying the ring and asked what she thought
about wearing it as a pendant.
She loved the idea and insisted that it should only be worn on a silk cord handwoven by her favorite weaver in Tokyo. Within a few weeks an envelope of handmade paper

arrived bearing the cord and a dear note from Tina.

After all these years ... . ring, silk cord and note
retain a place of honour on my desk.

botched attempts to look like Jean forced
thousands of women to cut their hair.

Clark Gable said of Jean -

This is getting more than a bit annoying.
It's way past time for spring - and we're still in wind season.
Even had snow flurries this week.

So far the only bright spot remains on my library table,
in the form of Carla's beautiful photograph of brilliant pink roses
from Vicki's garden.

and Carla Coulson for bringing a bit of spring to my world
via their beautiful book - French Essence.

Chanel :: What Karl Says - Fall 2011

The runway unfolded beyond a foggy forest
and a smoldering scorched earth.
There were ghostly shadows and smoke
which seemed to spew from volcanic ash.
Was this Karl Lagerfeld's Apocalyptic vision for Fall 2011 ?
He says no ... . the inspiration was more from the dark German
woods of his childhood, sprinkled with a bit of Fritz Lang .

He also denies that it's all black.
"It's shades of gray " . . . and a few notes of cream.
Frankly, I adore the textural contrasts as well as the emphasis on
the ankles. The detailed scrunch above the low boots , seems
to provide a perfect break before the distressed stretch jeans.
(Dare we say leggings ?)

And when there were trousers . . . they were rolled above
modestly feminine (and oh so wearable) low heels.

This little ankle peek really made me smile.

A crisp transparent hem which brushes the top of slightly
shimmering buttoned court shoes . . . with a cinched buckle added
to provide a bit of punctuation.

Another favorite theme - a bit ripped & shredded, tattered & torn.
Nothing overtly luxe.

It all feels very wearable and very adaptable to real life.
Perhaps even my very simple real life.

Intrepid girls .. . . . who don their gas masks and keep on dancing,
while dreaming of royal pavilions by the sea.

Modest ladies . . . . who change into bathing costumes in private
rolling enclosures, before descending into cool waters at a secluded
cove reserved for "Ladies Only."

Shanghai circa 1930 .. . . so very White Countess.

Love the elegant brocade as smoking jacket ,
the crisp white shirt with tie
and the shawl collars .. . ..
As much as I would love strolling into my closet and finding
any of these delicious pieces waiting,
what I long for most of all is the ability to look this great
in severely slicked back hair - wound tightly into a neat bun.

Alas - probably not in this lifetime . . . for any of the above.

A Rather Grand Flash Mob

Since the details of New York's Fashion Week are scheduled months ahead,
the axiously awaited surprises are usually reserved for which designer chooses
to emphasize which look, cut or design.

This year's surprise was a very non traditional presentation at a most
surprising location . . . . Moncler staged a flash mob in the middle
of Grand Central Station. There was an instant PR frenzy , which has rumbled
about the street for several days. The full video has finally appeared
and includes a staggering range of music from Miss Streisand to classical
and even rolls into a 42nd Street Broadway tap !

Stacks of Pumpkins :: The White House

I adore pumpkins and . . . I adore stacks.
I've even written about my love
of stacks of books and luggage - here & here & here.

So, it will come as no surprise that I was delighted to find the White House
had covered the north lawn and portico with glorious stacks of gourds,
pumpkins and squash for their Halloween event.

So simple - so effective.

Of course, I'm trying to figure out the method for keeping all those
pumpkins standing so tall. I'm thinking . . . cut off top stems and treat
the entire stack like a big shish kabob. Your thoughts . . ?

Marilyn :: 1953 :: A Fresh New Look

The summer of 1953 was a busy summer for photographer John Vachon.
LOOK magazine sent him to Canada to cover three American films being shot
in the Canadian Rockies. One of those films, River of No Return,
featured a blond starlet by the name of Marilyn Monroe.
Only three of the photos done during this shoot were ever published.
The rest have remained unpublished until now.
Vachon's letters to his wife, Penny, reveal his impressions of this rare
experience . . . including the fact that he felt Marilyn's co star, Robert Mitchum,
was an "unmitigated jerk."
Due to an injured ankle which prevented her from filming, Vachon had access
to Marilyn over a period of several days. This extraordinary portfolio captures
revealing images . . . from her posing poolside to riding a ski lift with soon
to be husband Joe DiMaggio.

These images truly give Marilyn fans a rarely seen and endearing portrait.
Vachon approached this glamour girl from his background as a people
photographer - not the usual Hollywood angle.

Of the over 100 never before seen photos, I especially adore the one of
Marilyn with crutches & cast and the single stylish black heel.

Priceless.

Cecil Beaton often photographed the elegant and the glamorous
whilst gazing over a shoulder into a mirror. There seems to be an
indication that their beauty was simply too much for a single
image ... . . or was it an acknowledgment that we should all
take a moment to reflect occasionally ?

He seems to have captured Gertrude Lawrence
in a reflective questioning moment.

My simple answer to that question.

Wishes vs. Reality :: Necker Island

I wish that I could stumble back to bloglandia with an apology for being
noticeably absent because I was kidnapped and swept away to a remote
private island . . . where I was forced to spend my days in a dreamy hammock
overlooking a shimmering pool, overlooking a shimmering ocean .... . .
whilst being served endless margaritas by an ever attentive staff -

and frolicking in that shimmering pool until it was time for my daily massage
in a small pavilion on the beach.
Alas, it's a lovely dream ... . . but, not a reality.
Best to say - Real Life swept in and took over Blog Life.
No posts, no visits to catch up with each of you .

Stanford and I haven't forgotten about you or our promise to
continue his travels to your mailboxes . His journey has simply
been a bit delayed.

Hugs to all of you who left thoughtful notes -
I hope your weekend will be .. . . dreamy.

Crossdressing Kings ??

I've long been fascinated by the central image in the collage above.
You probably recognize it as cousins King Albert and Czar Nicholas -
Isn't the resemblance striking ? More like brothers, than first cousins.

The photo was done in Berlin in 1913, just a few years before
The Last Czar would find himself on the cusp of a revolution and
turn to Albert in a plea for asylum in England.
Albert knew his country to be in a rather anti-Russian /German frenzy
and, fearing public opinion, denied this request.
Opps .. . . wrong choice, Al.

Guess we all know what happened to Nicky and his family . ..
that dreadful end in the basement in Yekaterinburg.

My collage above speaks of the fact that the clock was ticking and
there were but a few steps between this chummy ( yet ever so formal)
family portrait and the revolution which culminated with the tragic
deaths of the beautiful Romanov family in 1918.

Recent history:
I stumbled across a story which fills in some other details about the
photo . It would seem that the cousins decided to exchange formal
regalia for the portrait. Nicky, on the left, actually has on Albert's
dress uniform and Albert is wearing Nicky's !! !!

Can this be true ? Were they actually "Cross Dressing Kings"
having a bit of fun ?? !!

Though I've read several accounts of this meeting -
only one mentions this little tidbit.

Actually, I find it too funny to be true. Literally.
Do let me know if you have any further info on this ... . .

I've learned so much from her lovely blog - Fashion Is My Muse.
She's fascinated with the history of fashion and you never know
what insightful tidbit she'll be studying and sharing. Her remarkable
art is also featured as a never ending stream of inspiration.

This digital collage features some of her favorite themes:
17th century shoes, a mannequin and what appears to be
a beautifully detailed dress. Look closely ( i.e. view large)
and you'll see the dress is really a suit of armor.

I've called this piece Ingrid's Stage . .. . . and dedicated it
to her, because I feel this is the world in which she is
quite the leading lady . . .
AND

because she occasionally needs a reminder to take a bow.

Frankly, I'm more impressed with the creativity of this
seen-on-the-street kid. Even though my closet has seen its share
of the real thing - I've got to say this double C is by far
my all time favorite!

At Long Last - Unstuck

I've been struggling with learning some new tools.
That's an oblique way of saying .. . I've been in a creative rut.
Though I'm an old fashioned cut & paste (and stitch) collagist , I've
longed to teach myself some digital image layering which can be
utilized as a base.
Last week it all came together . There was I moment when I could exhale
and then a moment when I could start to play.

Just had to share my first steps.

Marvelous Maps

It takes a very special eye to look at something quite ordinary and
expand the possibilities of what it could be. Elizabeth Lecourt has both
the eye and the talent to bring that possibility into fruition.
From her talented hands emerge carefully crafted prim little pleated
dresses and a few classic shirts.

As one who adores maps and loves to play with paper - these unique
sculptures just sang to me.

Another Place-Another Time:: Lake Garda

Arriving by helicopter is always such fun.
Not exactly subtle or understated - but always a giggle.
The waiter on the terrace seems
to have noticed .... . these birds aren't noted for being quiet.

The trip from Milan was rather quick and oh so beautiful cruising
over the mountains to the western shore of Lake Garda. I'm delighted you've
decided to continue our little trek through a few of my favorite very
special spots in Italy.

I'm told this villa , built in 1892, underwent a 4 year renovation and opened
in 2001 as a small (15 rooms + 3 cottages) hotel which oozes rustic elegance.

Such sumptuous yet cozy details . Love the feel of these reception areas ... .
before we head up to our rooms - let's stroll the gardens and see what we can find.

Acres of gardens with numerous paths to all kinds of enchantment.
This looks interesting ... . let's take a peek.

What fun ! Looks a bit like Alice in Wonderland's choice for
tea with the Mad Hatter.
Shall we reserve a table with a view of the lake for dinner?
For now, I'm feeling a small afternoon treat is in order.

Perfection .. . A Gelato cart waiting on the lawn under the trees by the pool.

And a very special pool it is. Don't you just adore the vast manicured lawn
which reaches from lakeside to poolside,
broken only by a shaded canopy of ancient trees ?
I hope you'll find your room as delicious as I find mine ... . the balcony with
it's own Lemon tree and canvas cushioned stone balustrade is such a lovely detail.

An octagonal room with an octagonal bath .. . . those are hard to find.
But, well worth the trip - whether by land, air or sea.

FYI: This week we've found the Grand Hotel Villa Feltrinelli
in the village of Gargnano on Lake Garda.
As if the gardens, the views, and the exquisite service
weren't enough ... . it has quite a bit of history. Benito Mussolini spent his
last years in seclusion here. Winston Churchill and D.H. Lawrence considered
it to be one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Current amenities include silk lined bath robes, Aqua di Parma toiletries,
and laptops on request. All well and good ... . but the fact that they gladly
unpack and repack your luggage adds just the perfect touch of heaven -
along with their laundry service: each article of clothing is folded, wrapped
in tissue and secured with a ribbon and a sprig of fresh lavender.

Big sigh.

I think I shall never leave.

Isn't it always uplifting to come across someone doing something
which is almost a lost art .. . . and doing it with great style ?

Mary Beyer opened her handcrafted glove boutique in Paris just a year ago.

I have a particular fondness for gauntlets and fingerless gloves,
so I was thrilled to see these examples.
Natty little spats for the wrist ! LOVE .. . .
Sculptural elegance, indeed.

A Small Sojourn in Tuscany

I need an adventure.
Would you like to play?

Let's hop in my sweet little '59 Bentley convertible and
wander the backroads of Tuscany - just beyond Florence.

This looks promising ... . . let's explore.

Love the expansive garden and the solid simplicity of the house.

I wonder what's just around that corner .
So much for simplicity .. . . this looks enchanting!
I like.

Let's have lunch while they find just the perfect rooms for us.

Since I requested a suite with a ridiculously fabulous bath .. . .
I'd say this is perfection.

Can't wait to dive into that tub and investigate the frescos . . .

Let's plan on a swim in that divine pool in the garden at sunset.

This is just the weekend sojourn I needed -
I'm thrilled you could join me.

We've found the Villa Le Rose,
a 15th century Medici villa nestled in the Florentine hills
and recently renovated by the Ferragamo family.
All six bedrooms and vast gardens can be ours for
around 4,000 euros a night.

I'm always intrigued by personal collections of odd little objects
of no singular consequence .. .. . especially those with a hi-low
mix, such as these from a Maine antique dealer .

He obviously takes great pleasure in creating visual poetry with his unique
blend of found objects and treasures. Love the floor with row upon row of
hand painted white dots. Great attention to detail, mixed with large doses
of elegance and purity.

Each artful composition creates its own poetic moment .
Few words needed.

Tis the season for spring bonnets . Tis also the season of renewal, rebirth
and hatching a few new ideas. Tristan at Enchanted Revelry is always the
place to go for remarkable vintage photos ( where does he find so much
Wacky Stuff ??!) along with his ever clever commentary.

of this rather startling headgear. It seemed to bounce around my brain
for a few days, until I finally decided I needed to play with it a bit.

Enchantment Reigns at Kensington

Dreamlike Avant Garde installations and interactive performance art
at a palace inhabited by seven princesses .. . . including Queen Mary,
Queen Victoria and Princess Diana? Illusion or reality ?

As of Friday, March 26,
this fairytale has been brought to life in London at Kensington Palace
by Wildworks Theatre Company - along with quite a group of noted British
designers which include Vivienne Westwood, Boudicca, and Echo Morgan.

Always wanted to claim your Seat of Power ? Go ahead .
No velvet ropes or Do Not Touch signs.

This whimsical hand knit ( !! ) throne comes with an
invitation to be seated and make a wish.

Since court dress has always been an integral part of palace life, you'll see various
contemporary interpretations scattered about as sculptures and illustrations to
document the historical fairytale experience.

Miss Westwood placed this gown on the Kings' Stairway ... . . . complete with
with not-so-royal-brooches which exclaim:

I Am Expensive!
and
You Think You Own The World ? !

Feel free to play with a few of the thousands of toy soldiers.
Knock 'em down and rearrange the army to YOUR liking.

Stroll the magical dreamscape in the royal nursery.

Loose yourself in Queen Mary II's bedchamber -
where Aminaka Wilmont created a Dress of Tears
based on the tradition of collecting bottles of tears during times of mourning.

You'll be invited to leave a note of your own remembrance of the
last tears you shed.

Every room tells a story about the former residents and their life at court.
Lots of drama .. .. .
and pure enchantment.

I'm thinking this exhibition ( open until January 2012 ) is a must see
field trip for anyone inclined to appreciate a fresh take on British history.

I couldn't sail away without leaving you with this delicious piece
of golden heaven from the Alexander McQueen 2010-2011 Winter
Collection , shown yesterday in a private salon in Paris. Though press
photographers weren't allowed, CyanaTrendland scooped a series of
remarkable images which they posted this morning.

Slipping into that jacket of metallic feathers would surely leave
one feeling caressed by angels .. . .

Everything's Coming Up Alice

This seems to be the week of Alice .... . . and Tim and Johnny.
Everywhere we turn there are fantastic images of Johnny Depp and
Helena Bonham Carter as envisioned by Tim Burton in the current
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
This classic story has enchanted and inspired many versions and many
illustrators to create visions to accompany Lewis Carroll's romp
through Wonderland.

We all carry memories of our childhood books and their illustrations.
I must say, my memories don't look anything like these remarkable
characters created by Blanche McManus.
My Alice didn't have near as much style !
What a sophisticated palette of magic she created ... .
quite the jazzy storybook.

Love the multiple top hats on the Mad Hatter.
Love Alices' fan.
Love the perspective on the checkerboard croquet court.

Love the perfect dollops of R E D.

Renaissance Red :: Bronzino

No one captured the rigid formality of court life in Florence
better than Agnolo Bronzino ( 1503-1572).
These are three of my favorites. The sumptuous details in the jewels
and fabric leave me slightly swooning .. . . especially the rare softness
of the red in each of these paintings.
Since one of my personal challenges for 2010 is to "Expand my Vision" -
I loved playing with these classic images to give them a bit of a
Fractured Renaissance effect with the multiple polaroids a la Mr. Hockney.

I rather think this group might have welcomed a playful moment
away from all that court formality .

Here's hoping you'll be having more than a few playful moments
this weekend ... . .

Valentines Made from ... . What !! ?

I'd been saving these grocery bags for months.

Loved the funny little faux Victoriana illustrations ... . . and the red/black
color palette on the brown craft paper.

Then it hit me : I'd rip up the grocery bags and cut out little hearts
with my pinking shears. The next step would be to outline the pinked edges
with my gold leaf pen.
Of course, everything is more fun when layered with some gold tulle
and stitched over black cardstock.

Voila! Valentines pour vous !!

Multiple Mirrors of Edinburgh

I know I always say this ... . . but, you REALLY must click on this photo to
view large. I adore photographing mirrors which reflect other mirrors for
a rather endless bounce of ongoing play, and this was the ultimate
opportunity.
Some of you may remember this image from a previous post on my favorite
(and Very Red .. .) hotel in Edinburgh, Scotland: Prestonfield House.
For a another visit to this small gem, do go HERE to refresh your memory.
Especially if you'd like to hop from the New York Red
of our evening at the Gramercy Park Hotel to a Scottish experience.

Just to the left of the main building .. . down a stone walk &
across a green velvet lawn .. . you'll find a circular stone building
which started life as the original Georgian stables.
Today it serves as a wondrous ballroom whose walls are draped in
red velvet with a series of ornate gold mirrors circling the entire room.

Let's don our kilts and dance the the night away.... . .

And, don't forget to glance over your partners' shoulder
to catch the sparkling reflections in all those golden mirrors ,
before you head back to your cozy room at dawn.

Think perfect mix of sumptuous fabrics, regal furnishings and
monumentally scaled art from the personal collections of Cy Twombly,
Damien Hirst and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Who could put this all together with such panache ??
Perhaps only the multi talented Julian Schnabel ... . .
artist, film director, interior designer and noted pajama collector.

And where could this little slice of heaven be found ?
The Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City.

Dive in. Enjoy.
Let's retreat to the Penthouse to prop up our feet and consider the
perfect evening after a day of museums, galleries and just a
bit of shopping.

Red Theatrics

After declaring February to be a Month of Red ... . I decided my first
Red Leap would need to be my blog banner. Moulin Rouge pour moi??
Why not jump in and start with a bit of Can Can . . .

Upon further inspection, I found Red to be the color of choice for
all things theatrical - be they Paris or New York, magazines or posters.

Red is also the color of choice, which spanned the realm from
Hamlet to Josephine.
Whether a small touch or a big splash .. ... .. Red is HOT !

Reflections on Red :: A Brief History

When Theme Thursday announced this weeks' topic to be R E D ,
I was thrilled. As many of my regular readers know,
Red is always thrilling to me ... . .. so much so that
I browsed my photos for everything with a red tag attached and found
dozens of images in every category. Oh my . Where to start??

Interiors : though I generally prefer a neutral palette with small touches
of red, I was reminded of one of my favorite Deep Red powder rooms,
done for a client who wanted total immersion in a rich luscious surprise
in this tiny space. (Do click on this photo to view large and see all the
remarkable details in these unique antique pieces)
Travel: this is my all time favorite red repetition image from my travel files -
the Liverpool Docks with Red Brick / Red Bouys / Red Columns and
A Red Boat. How often do you run into a boat which appears to be totally
dipped in red paint?!
Art: Another venue where small accents of red, in an otherwise
black / white palette are a favorite theme ... . found in many pieces of
my mixed media. This one is called " She Always Stopped Traffic .. . "
and features a Phillip Treacy hat layered over vintage sheet music
and silver tulle.

Wardrobe: It's found head to toe in my closet ... . .. mostly with great
quantities of black in between.
I can't bear leaving out so many other really fab R E D photos. February is
such a great red month ... . we haven't even started with the Valentines.
Why stop with one day of Red ??

I've made an executive decision - this is RED Month at studio Judith.
Total immersion .
If you love Red as much as I love Red , stop by for more enchanting Red.

J :: Altered Postcard

What ??!
There are other people out there who like the same silly stuff I like?

This is still my reaction when I come across a blog or a flickr group devoted
to some relatively obscure fascination. As many of you know, I adore
vintage photographs and mixed media art. Oh , and when I'm not playing
in those worlds ... . . I have a day job as an Interior Designer. It's fun - but,
truth be told : It just provides the income to keep me in art supplies to
play with.

There are a few places where all my favorite things come together and this
little postcard is one such place. It's a postcard, part of a group
which I had made (using my photograph of one of my design projects)
to use for some business correspondence. Simple, direct and
rather professional.

Then I decided to play with it ... . so I took this business card and
"altered" it by doing a bit of stitching / painting & layering
a miniature playing card with some tulle ( love playing cards, too).

Voila! Business Meets Art.

I suppose it's inevitable that all these little pieces eventually come together.
The particular occasion for this post of this piece is my discovery of a group of
postcard / mail art lovers who share their postcards on Fridays.

What a fun idea ... . . I think I'll play!

white brushed felt forming the midpoint.

My George .. . . in Drag

Some of you may recognize this guy. He's often associated with
Mt. Vernon, cherry trees and US one dollar bills.

He's rarely associated with paper dolls , dresses and gold tulle ... . .
which is just what I felt he needed. After all, we all need to have
some fun and play dress up occasionally.
The spring edition of Art Doll Quarterly agreed with me.
They've featured my George in Drag paper doll in their Spring 2010 edition.
It was such a kick to find it in my mailbox yesterday .. . flip through and
see my little GW in all his froufy silver / gold / tulle glory on page 104.

They've even declared my work to be the inspiration for a new department at
Art Doll Quarterly and have encouraged readers to submit " Paper Personas .. .
over-the-top imaginative interpretations of the human form."

What a giggle ... .
I just had to share this.

Another Place Another Time :: Our Daily Bread

There's something pure and simple about a loaf of bread.
Few of us even take the time to go to a bakery to secure this
basic of life. We know it can easily be found along the aisle of a larger
store, which has a bakery section, along with other basics of life.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to open the front door and find this rather
natty fellow, in his tweed jacket / vest and tie, holding a basket
of fresh baked bread?

How about a giant loaf of french bread delivered in this Citroen panel truck ?
I love the way they're standing at attention along the sides of the truck ... .
rather like soldiers ready to depart on their next mission.
The mission: Feed & Nurture.

Purchasing a loaf from this peddler in Caracus, Venezuela (circa 1903)
would have been quite the luxury to the housewives in this barrio.
The norm at this time would have been bake-your-own.

These Goanese bakers have me a bit confused. They obviously work as
a team, with the large basket to hold bread ... . which then appears to
be served on a tray. Is that long stick attached to the basket?
And, why does the baker on the right rate matching checked trousers
and shoes ... . . whereas the boy on the left is sans shoes ?
During WW I these bakers were equipped to take down the tents and roll on a moments
notice, to keep their fellow British soldiers supplied with their daily bread.
Nowhere to put those trays of bread?
Not a problem ... . just sit them in the dirt.

And what do you think that little improvised device to the right of the photo is?
A canvas sling to hold the dough while it rises ??

P.S.
I've been thinking about those boys from Goa.
And ... . . I believe my questions are answered by the fact that
this was a posed photo with the bakers exhibiting the tools of
their trade: the long stick being a long handled spatula for
taking the loaves out of an oven. Those British Army bakers
are pictured with the same utensil. What d'ya think?

Just One More :: Veil

Since I had veils on the brain last week, I came upon this beauty
in my files and just had to share it with you.

I feel it's from a photographer I should know .. . . but, I really can't
identify the source. (If you can , please do!)

Don't you just love the perfection of the contrast between the
ethereal quality of the veil & cabbage rose with the geometric
simplicity of her dress?

Beneath the Surface & Behind the Veil

I have long been enchanted with any type of fabric that has a sheer surface.
Lace, veils, net and tulle are found in great abundance in my closet
and my art. They seem to be an overt invitation to .. . . take a peek.

If our natural inclination is to seek that which is beneath a surface,
this is a tangible illusion.

We don't have to wonder what's beneath the surface , it's generally
quite visible - but, the message is clearly : Look but don't touch.

A bit of instant mystery.
I was pleased to find that one of the great photo journalists of the 2oth century
also shared my love of this illusory surface. Many veils are to be found
in the beguiling photographs of Alfred Eisenstaedt. These first photos were
done for another great fan of veils, the milliner Lily Dache.

Such a mysterious image .
Does anyone know the story behind this famous veiled lady? I believe this
photo was taken in Paris in the 20's.
Mr. Eisenstaedt even did a series of photos of this questionable man behind a veil.

The Countess Ludovica Gaetani d'Aragona is a girl I can definitely relate to.
She wore a snappy straw veiled boater with giant glam sunglasses at the
Rome Golf Club in 1947.

Love the look. Love the attitude.

Love the layers of surfaces which allow her protection
from being too .. . ... exposed.

Current Enchantments :: Castles with Moats

Though I'm a girl who's sworn off the Large Life for the
SmallerSimpler Life ... . . I do still relish my privacy and
nothing symbolizes privacy like a castle with a moat.

I love the idea of withdrawing to my drawing room,
and shutting out the world, by pulling up a drawbridge.

Since the reality of castle dwelling generally includes
far too many drafty rooms and more staff than I care to manage -
I'll continue to snuggle up in my small
(but oh so warm & cozy)
little house behind a gated garden wall.

And
occasionally create a few fairy tale castles ,
because they're such fun to play with.

Go ahead. Play with a few of your own fairy tales today.

Polka Dot Pieces

What?? I almost missed a Polka Dot Opportunity!
Know I'm a bit late to the party, but couldn't resist.
Just read Hazel's Clever Pup post on Polka Dots and
Bob Dylan and discovered it's Theme Thursday
for one of my all time fav themes.

I love including dots in many of my mixed media pieces ... .
especially this collage with the coronation painting of Queen Elizabeth I,
where I took the liberty of adding giant gold dots to her dress.

Reality Shift :: Winged Victory 2010

After yesterdays' thoughts on adjusting to a new reality,
I sat down to create a piece of art which encompassed
what that might look like. These are the first two
pieces from this series.

I liked the idea of taking something "known" and giving
it a new interpretation .

Indeed, to see something familiar through new eyes -
to Expand My Vision.

That sounds like a perfect resolution for a new decade.

Mr. T & I have determined we've been way too reclusive in
2009 .. . . and it's about time we have a few friends over to
bring in the New Year.

To set the tone for a more amusing 2010 we're sending out party hats
to a few old friends

and several adventurous souls whom we'd love to get to
know in the coming year.

They'll be an adorable group of costumed dancers ,
lots of festive food and libation.
Shall I save a hat for you ?

something that you think (hope ! ) will please a dear friend .

That's just what I felt when I came across this delightful
vintage Vogue cover. She's just the perfect moment of
elegant enchantment and holiday whimsy I wanted to send
to each of my dear and treasured bloggy friends ... . . from Brisbane
to Oia Santorini, St. Remy de Provence , Paris & Granada ,
as well as so many other glam spots
